The Sandman season 2 part 2
My enthusiasm for the Sandman sadly took a nosedive with this part.
I still hate the ending in the comics, but somehow the TV show made it worse. Not because it was sadder, but because the show went to great lengths to make Dream more sympathetic, and because of that, his death made even less sense. I really started wondering if they were going to come up with an alternative end where he somehow survives, but no, it ends just like the comics. And then Dream's just gone. The end. It felt so anticlimactic. It just happened.
And then there's a WHOLE last episode without Dream, which is what I thought the show runners where trying to avoid, by making him more of a classic main character and cutting out some side stories.
Yeah, no thanks, I did not like this second half of the season. I also thought it felt really different to part 1. Like all the good stories were told in the first half, and this last bit was just "stuff happening". At least in the comic, all the events felt grand and/or important. Here I was like, "ok, he's gone I guess".
Because of that letdown, I don't really have much more to say, other than a few notes I made while watching:
First night, "Time and Night" and "Fuel for the Fire":
- The talk with Hob got a bit extended I think. Omg, we got to see Dream explain the wager to Hob, in actual TV canon! I have read that a million times in a million fanfics.
- I like that Dream voluntarily sets Alex free. That didn't happen in the comics.
- Mum glasses: Aaaagh, not the baby :< I know he survives in the comics, but aaaah.
Second night, "The Kindly Ones" and "Long Live the King":
- They're changing a lot here I think. Don't remember John Constantine and the Corinthian teaming up in the comic? I can't remember Daniel becoming powerful before Dream dies either.
- Nuala's arc definitely got changed. I liked her in this though, so didn't mind. How did it go in the comic again? I think she summons Dream because she wants to ask him to love her. She wasn't Titania's second in command or anything like that either. I liked that they changed it to be Titania instead that summons Dream.
- And there we go, he's dead. And I still didn't like it. Everything about Dream as the main character seemed like it was going somewhere, but nah, he dead. The end.
Third night, "A Tale of Graceful Ends":
- Took a little while to like Dream-Daniel. But he was allright.
